Waste management is a serious problem all over the world, and unfortunately, as the global population expands, so does the amount of waste. This of course is having a significant impact on the environment and also on the quality of life. Whether trash is disposed of in landfill sites, or whether it gets incinerated, it’s still hugely detrimental to the planet. While we cannot totally eliminate the problem, there are certain things we can do in order to minimize the damage being caused.

For example, more trees could be planted in order to clean the air we breathe, towns and cities can enforce effective anti-pollution regulations, taxes can be imposed on the use of plastic carrier bags, which at present, are distributed so freely by the average store. People can become more active in terms of recycling, given that such a large percentage of trash that ends up in landfill sites could in effect be recycled. If everyone works together, a very real difference can be made, and a good way to start would be by segregating our rubbish rather than throwing everything into the same bin.

A good way to get started with this is by using different colored garbage bags or garbage cans. This is already being done by many businesses, but it’s something the average home owner also needs to consider. After all, even at home we have many types of trash getting thrown out everyday. The average person’s garbage can contains plastic, glass, paper, food scraps, and etc. Much of this could be recycled at a recycling plant, but it is up to each homeowner to segregate their rubbish before it leaves their premises.

To make this task that much easier, one can now buy heavy duty trash bags and bins in a variety of colors, with each color designated for use with a particular type of waste. Here is a short breakdown of which colors are typically used for the different types of trash:

Black – Used for the collection of non-biodegradable materials such as plastics, Styrofoam, and etc.

Clear – Clear bags are primarily used for the disposal of glass bottles, tin cans, old newspapers, cardboard, and virtually anything else which can easily be recycled.

Red – Red is almost always the color of choice for dealing with materials which are potentially hazardous to one’s health and to the environment. This would include infectious and/or bio-hazardous materials, including things like used syringes and etc.

Green – These are generally used for the disposal of biodegradable items such as food scraps for example. In fact, anything which readily decomposes can go into these bags or bins.

Blue heavy duty trash bags – Generally used for industrial garbage such as heavy duty plastics, glass, some types of wood, and even certain fabrics.

As a home owner, you don’t need to have the full spectrum of heavy duty trash bags or bins, but if you even segregate just some of your waste, you’ll already be contributing to a greener, healthier planet for future generations to enjoy.
